ACTIVITY: Scouts & Venturers will be participating in a supervised whittling and wood-carving activity at the Scout Hall. This activity is designed to teach safe knife handling, basic whittling techniques and responsible use of outdoor tools.

SAFETY: A safety briefing and demonstration will be provided before the activity begins. Venturers must demonstrate that they can handle their knife safely and follow leader instructions before participating.

WHAT TO WEAR: Uniform

WHAT TO BRING:

Scouts & Venturers may bring one suitable knife for the activity.

Accepted knives:

·      Folding Swiss Army-style knife

·      Opinel-style folding knife

·      Single-blade knife carried in a secure sheath, with a blade no longer than 8 cm

Not permitted:

·      Flick knives or switchblades

·      Kitchen knives

·      Large hunting, survival or combat-style knives

·      Damaged, loose or unsafe knives

·      Any knife that a Leader considers unsuitable for the activity

Leaders have final discretion over whether a knife may be used. Any unsuitable knife will be secured by a Leader and returned at the end of the activity

Knives must be transported directly to and from the Scout activity, securely closed or sheathed and contained in a bag or other secure container.

Knives must not be carried openly or used on the way to or from the Hall.

On arrival, all knives will be checked by a Leader for suitability and condition. Knives will remain under Leader control when they are not being used for the activity.

OTHER: 

All participants must:

·      Follow Leader instructions at all times.

·      Participate in the knife-safety briefing before using a knife.

·      Maintain a safe distance from other participants while carving.

·      Always cut away from their body.

·      Remain seated or stationary while using an open knife.

·      Close or sheath the knife before standing, walking or passing it to another person.

·      Immediately stop and safely put down/close their knife when instructed.

·      Wear closed shoes.

·      Use only the timber/materials provided or approved by Leaders.

There will be zero tolerance for unsafe, reckless or threatening behaviour involving a knife. A Venturer who does not follow the safety rules will immediately surrender their knife to a Leader and may be removed from the activity.
